Model presentation is a crucial step for every artist in building their portfolio. In this tutorial we'll look at a few techniques for creating global illumination or "clay" renders using 3d Studio Max and a variety of different render engines. The focus of a clay render is to showcase the 3d model in a professional manner, while capturing as much of the detail as possible. There are many techniques for creating these types of renders. In this tutorial we'll focus on achieving a good clay render using the scanline renderer, as well as Mentalray and finally Vray. We'll also look at implementing additional lighting, adding color variation, removing noise, as well as adding image based lighting using HDRI images.
